Materials/Chemical Engineer – Advanced Ceramic Fibers (ACF)

Location: Idaho Falls, Idaho

Department: Manufacturing & Production

Job Type: Full-time | On-site

Salary: Depends on Experience

At ACF, we’re not just building products—we’re inventing the future. As pioneers in advanced ceramic fiber technology—including our patented Fi-Bar—ACF is ushering in a new era of high-performance composite materials for aerospace, defense, consumer electronics, energy, and other demanding industries. Our fibers are designed to thrive in extreme environments and are unlocking breakthrough capabilities in performance, design, and aesthetics.

We’re seeking a talented and motivated Materials/Chemical Engineer to join our growing team. This individual will play a critical role in optimizing our proprietary Direct Conversion Process, developing new fiber architectures, and scaling production for both structural and aesthetically driven applications.

What You'll Do:

As a Materials/Chemical Engineer at ACF, you’ll help refine and scale our transformative fiber conversion process and contribute directly to the advancement of materials that are revolutionizing multiple industries. You will:

  • Lead design of experiments to optimize conversion parameters for transforming PAN-based carbon fibers of various types into ACF’s advanced Fi-Bar.
  • Characterize fiber materials using techniques such as SEM, XRD, TGA, DSC, tensile testing, and microscopy to evaluate structure, composition, and performance.
  • Investigate and develop processes that enhance fiber performance and aesthetics for use in extreme environments and consumer electronics and design-driven applications.
  • Translate lab-scale processes into scalable production methods while maintaining consistency, quality, and repeatability.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (engineering, manufacturing, quality) to integrate new materials and methods into pilot and full-scale operations.
  • Support proposal writing, data analysis, and customer reporting for government and commercial R&D programs.
  • Document research findings, SOPs, and material specifications in a clear and organized format.
  • Contribute to ACF’s IP portfolio through inventive process or product advancements.
  • As needed manage strategic projects across R&D, manufacturing, and client-facing operations.

What You Bring – Skills & Experience:

  • Hands-on experience with high-temperature materials, carbon or ceramic fibers, or composite manufacturing preferred.
  • Strong background in thermochemistry, polymer chemistry, or materials processing.
  • Proficiency in lab instrumentation, process control, and data analysis.
  • Familiarity with fiber handling, coatings, or surface modification techniques is a plus.
  • Experience supporting materials development for aerospace, defense, or consumer product applications highly desirable.
  • Strong analytical and documentation skills. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced R&D/manufacturing environment.

Education & Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field.
  • Minimum 2–5 years of experience in a materials research, chemical processing, or manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge of Lean, Six Sigma, or other continuous improvement methodologies is a plus.
  • Looking for individuals who thrive in dynamic, fast-evolving environments—people who take initiative, embrace ambiguity, and are eager to tackle challenges with curiosity and resourcefulness.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen.
  • This position requires access to information regulated under ITAR. Therefore, only U.S. Persons may apply.

Why ACF?

  • Work at the cutting edge of materials science, advancing the performance and aesthetic possibilities of high-tech composites.
  • Be part of a mission-driven team trusted by industry leaders in aerospace, defense, and consumer electronics.
  • Enjoy a collaborative environment where invention and innovation are core to our culture.
  • Competitive pay, learning opportunities, and a chance to make a real impact in a high-growth company.
  • Live and work in Idaho Falls, a beautiful and affordable gateway to outdoor recreation with easy access to Yellowstone, Jackson Hole, and world-class skiing, fishing, and hiking.
